Customer Profile: Satya

Satya 3

Satya South Indian Restaurants have been providing the locals and the wider community with traditional South Indian Cuisine for over two decades. The chain of restaurants/lounges was started by the Akuthota Family in 1999, which lead to multiple restaurants being opened across Auckland – In Sandringham, Grafton, Ponsonby & Mt Eden.

However, the more recently opened Satya Chai Lounges have created a massive buzz in the industry, in the past few years! It’s considered one of the most ‘Instagrammable’ food joints, with photos doing little to no justice to the ambience or taste!

The extension of Satya Chai Lounges led the Satya chain to great success by including an extensive menu filled with delicacies and due to the immaculate authentic ambience of the lounges – it takes you straight to India’s street food joints. The décor, the cutlery, the lighting and the essence of the environment transports you straight into the heart of India.

We speak to Kamesh, the manager across the chain of the Satya Restaurants & close friend to the Akuthota Family.

What is your most popular dish?
That’s a tricky one, given the range of our extensive menu!

However, here’s a few:

  • Masala dosa is a popular South Indian dish made from a fermented batter of rice and lentils. It is a type of dosa, which is a thin crepe made from fermented rice and lentil batter. Masala dosa is typically served with a potato filling and chutneys.
  • Chicken Chettinad is a popular Indian dish that originated in the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu. It is a spicy and flavorful dish that is made with chicken that has been marinated in a blend of whole spices and then cooked in a rich gravy. We make this from scratch, in which we blend the whole spices ourselves!
  • Paneer 555 is a popular Indian appetizer made with deep-fried paneer (cottage cheese) cubes tossed in a spicy sauce made with onions, jalapenos, cashew nuts, and spices.

What is your favourite Goodman Fielder Product?
Fortune Everyday Basmati Rice & Fortune Long Grain Rice.

Rice is a key fundamental ingredient for South Indian dishes because it is used to make Dosa’s and Idli’s – staple South Indian dishes. We ferment the Fortune Long Grain Rice to create high-quality batters for these dishes. We also serve the Fortune Everyday Basmati Rice, alongside our curries for our customers to indulge in.

Therefore, we do not compromise on the quality of our ingredients. We ensure that all our sourced ingredients enrich the flavours of our foods while keeping it authentic to the ethnic roots.

Why would you recommend Goodman Fielder Foodservice as a supplier, to others in the hospitality business?
The best thing is the service and the commitment. All the sales rep, especially Sandeep Sharma maintains a good and genuine relationship with us. The team at Goodman Fielder has good knowledge of the products and are committed to understand the requirements we have for our ingredients based on our menu range. They go an extra mile to recommend products and deliver samples to test new ingredients. They don’t leave it just at that, they ensure to follow-up and check-in with us for the feedback – they’re committed to understand what works and what doesn’t.

The team is also committed to enhance our menu and they’re willing to grow together. The sales reps work hard and go out of their way to meet our demands/needs in a prompt manner. More so, there’s a good level of comfort with them and they are very easy to reach out to.

Any tips for anyone who wants to open a Restaurant?
The best tip would be to stand out by being authentic and creating original dishes that connects deeply to the origin of your heritage. This is crucial due to the market being saturated with restaurants too similar to each other now days.

Customers like going to restaurants that have different dishes & different taste, hence, if you offer the same exact dish as the other 1000 restaurants, you won’t have a unique selling point and won’t stand out.

Therefore, an original menu and authentic taste truly matters, especially if you want your restaurant to do wonders!
